On Friday, January 3, President Donald Trump ordered a U-S drone airstrike that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani while he was at an airport in Bagdad. Administrative officials said the reason for the attack was because Soleimani had plans to attack various Americans in the Middle East and that he was a major threat.
The airstrike that killed Soleimani was in response to the New Year's Eve attack on the U-S Embassy in Bagdad, where an estimated 6,000 Iraqi protestors managed to get into an area that is described as a reception-like area after scaling a wall.
On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of Iranians took to the streets to mourn Soleimani. Many shouting "death to America" while marching as well as various other chants such as "America is the Great Satan," was also heard among the people as they followed cars holding the bodies of Soleimani and others killed in the drone strike.
After Soleimani's death (and the days of mourning), the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed there would be an act of "harsh revenge".
That revenge came early Tuesday night in the form of a strike, when Iran launched more than a dozen ballistic missiles against two US Military bases, in Al-Assad and Erbil, Iraq where American troops are based. There were no immediate reports of casualties and the Pentagon has said that they are still seeing how much damage there was.
Currently, there are 9,000 troops in the region with almost 3,000 more ready to deploy.
Nancy Pelosi learned of the attack while in the middle of a Democratic Leadership meeting and after being briefed by Vice President Mike Pence, she wrote on Twitter about the attack.

The good news (if any), is that the latest reports say that the retaliation attack caused no deaths.
No matter what side of the political line you fall on, war is simply not an option. A war, now, would not only have devastating effects for the U-S, but for the world.
