I am not a professional sports commentator or analyst. That being said, I have a prediction to make. I have always had a eye for picking which player every year would make their mark in college football. Not only would the make the most impact in their team and but also on the highlight reels.
Two years ago I put faith in a young man named Stefon Diggs, a wide receiver from Maryland. While his career went mostly unnoticed in college, he was drafted to the Minnesota Vikings and has greatly exceeded everyone's expectations. Now again in 2016 I predict another player who will have a great year and most likely play in the NFL.
He has good speed, high agility in tight spaces, a good arm, great ball control and vision. These are the weapons of quarterback of Houston Cougars quarterback Greg Ward Jr.
Possibly the biggest star on his team he is in command on the sixth best team in college football as of September 24, 2016. While they have a long season ahead of them let me talk about what makes this kid special. I remember many years ago growing up watching the guy who was considered the greatest mobile quarter back of all time Micheal Vick. With fast legs and strong arms he lit up the highlight reels week after week. Despite his teams record he was a player who always stood out. I see that same potential in Greg Ward Jr., Albeit he has a little smaller frame than Vick, he is just as fast but also possess great skill of getting rid of the ball and throwing on the run. If he did not miss the second game of the season due to injury he would have been a possible Heisman candidate.
More importantly for Ward is the rest of his season. For the first time in school history the Cougars are ranked in the top ten and have the possibility to jump to number 1 if a few teams lose and they remain perfect. This is really rare in smaller schools like Houston and they really have a chance to leave a mark that will last forever on the college football stage. To be honest I like their chances, despite being in the American Athletic Conference, which also happens to be East Carolina's University's conference. The Houston Cougars have really showed to be a different kind of football team compared to what this conference usually yields.
While they are nothing like Alabama or other big Division I schools they have recruited most of their players from the surrounding area in Texas rather than all over the United States like most teams. This will an interesting strategic choice and I am anxious to see if that aspect allows like minded players to work more effectively as a unit. Despite all his skill Greg Ward Jr. will need every bit of help he can to shock the nation because even though he wears the number 1 does not mean achieving so will be easy!
