Political science (n): The branch of knowledge that deals with systems of government; the analysis of political activity and behavior.
Here are some things poli-sci majors know too well.
1. Your phone is always buzzing
Your phone goes off, then again, then once more. Upon looking at it, you're not greeted with a plethora of texts because you're so popular. In turn, you're greeted with NPR, The Washington Post, and BBC updates about whatever is currently breaking in the news.
2. Reminding friends/family to vote
Because you know how important voting is, you try to remind (and encourage) people whom you know to vote. In addition, giving them resources to learn about candidates/issues; so they don't just show up to the polls and pick a choice because they heard it said somewhere.
3. People asking your party affiliation
In general, it's never a great idea to ask someone's political affiliation, especially if they're a mere acquaintance. When someone hears you're a political science major, it's their intuitive desire to ask; your preceding answer (granted you tell them), will have them respond like you're best friends or enemies when you couldn't care less what they think. There's more to someone than their political views, people!
4. Being told you're too young to understand politics
Generally, elders have more wisdom. It's a given fact. Although, when you're dedicating your time and money to a major, your life and time for those years are usually consumed with whatever that is. So sorry, insert relative name here, if you think my opinion is invalid just because I'm not of age yet.
5. People thinking you're evil
I've had full-blown adults tell me that I'm going to get myself into the mess in Washington and become a lying theft. In reality, most political science majors I've met want to get into politics to restore "the common good" within society, unlike current politicians in office.
6. Debate over 'Poly Sci' vs 'Poli Sci'
There's an intangible bridge separating those who call themselves 'Poly sci' majors versus 'Poli sci' majors. #TeamPoliSci.
7. Pre-Law Track
Many people act like you can't just receive a B.A. in plain, political science. Instead what you need to do is the pre-law track, to actually ever obtain a job.
8. You call call yourself a scientist
Having a degree in political science allows for you to call yourself a political scientist, and could possibly trick people into thinking you do cool labs and stuff, instead of just staring at graphs and analyzing numbers.
9. Writing and reading
Read a book. Write a paper on it. Cry. Repeat. This is the reality of many political science classes.
10. Hating "hard" sciences and math
It may sound like we like science, but not the "science" that comes to most people's minds. Although, political science is in the College of Arts and Sciences for many colleges, which means we still have to take some science and math classes, sadly.
All in all, every major has its ups and downs.
