Political Parties Aside, We Need Gun Control Now

This isn't about politics; this is about the safety of the American people.

At least 59 people were killed in the Las Vegas mass shooting and 527 were injured.

Gun ownership in the US is the highest in the world.

Most massacres utilize legal weapons. The Las Vegas shooter used a mechanism called a bump stock in order to shoot his gun more rapidly, killing more people at once.

The Pulse shooter would not have been able to acquire the weapon he used if he had been properly checked because of his history of domestic violence, support of terrorist organizations, and mental instability.

We always say there’s no way to prevent this, but we are the only nation where the number of mass shootings this year has almost caught up to the number of days in this year.

Japan requires gun purchasers to go through several checks and tests in order to actually purchase a gun, which are only shot guns and air rifles, and they continue to be checked annually. Japan had 11 gun deaths in 2008. The US had 12,000.

How many times are we going to have to use the phrase “worst in modern American history” until this stops? Until people realize that this is no longer a political issue? This is a safety issue that directly affects you and your family.

The people who are now pushing for gun control in the wake of the Vegas tragedy are not exploiting it for their own political benefit. We are calling on the leaders of our nation to fix a problem that has gotten way out of control. We are trying to prevent anymore of these tragedies from happening. We have your children, your parents, your husbands and wives on our minds. We want to protect them. We want to protect you.

There is pretty much always a pattern that we follow after mass shootings, which sadly, has become a routine part of American life. There is always a sudden spike in the want for gun control by the majority of American citizens, but then the effect of the tragedy wears down over time. It becomes less talked about in the news, and instead we are talking about what Kylie Jenner is going to name her new baby. Our politicians, who did nothing even when we were fired up, continue to do absolutely nothing. And some politicians, even though they have to acknowledge the fact that less guns equals less homicides, don’t want to support stricter gun control laws because it conflicts with their political party’s traditional beliefs.

Our politicians are putting their own political agendas above the safety of your family.

Our country’s lax gun laws are a direct aid to the people who want to hurt you and your family.

Some people may argue that the people who enjoy guns and use them properly shouldn’t be punished for the wackos who don’t use them properly. But the real truth is, sport and self defense do not require assault weapons. If you care about your guns that much, you would not mind going through extra background checks in order to make sure you are stable enough to use them. If you have any common sense, you would not mind going through the extra background checks in order to make sure your family is safe when they attend a music festival or when your kids go to school. If you have any morals, you would see this as your duty as an American citizen. As a human being.

Some people may saw that laws don’t stop criminals. With that logic, why have any laws at all if criminals will just break them? Why have traffic laws when people will roll through stop signs anyway? Why make murder a crime when people will do it anyway?

Some people may say that they have no way in stopping this, that their individual voice isn’t loud enough. But that mentality is a cancer that breeds in the lazy and the weak. Not only can you make a difference, you can save lives.

Educate yourself about gun laws. Don’t form opinions until you actually know the facts so that people can’t throw them back in your face to prove you wrong.

It’s time we make a change. We cannot wait until the next “worst in modern American history” tragedy happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
