So unless you live under a rock, you've probably heard about the obsession surrounding Nintendo's new release of Pokemon Go (although, the rock you're under probably has a charmander under it, so you still have probably some idea of this game's existence). Basically the concept of the game is that users travel around to different geographic areas in search of Pokemon to catch. Different areas produce different types of Pokemon as well as different types of day. For example, near water you will find many water Pokemon. If one goes out at night they'll find nocturnal Pokemon, such as Gastly.
Because people are so obsessed with this game, a lot will travel to some pretty unique places looking for Pokemon. Some people have put on social media that they have walked for as long as three-hours just searching for Pokemon. Basically, this game has got a ton of people moving.
The American society definitely has an obesity problem. While this has been established, it is still up for debate on how exactly to combat it. Michelle Obama's time as the first lady has had a huge contribution to the fight against childhood obesity. Her mission in particular focuses on providing healthier lunches in schools as well as trying to get kid's moving.
A lot of people aren't into Michelle Obama's plan just because it feels forced upon them. With Pokemon Go, kids(and adults) are moving by choice. They are hunting Pokemon and driven by the desire to beat the game. While this does have obvious dangers, such as the danger of people getting hit by cars, it is accomplishing something that politicians and community leaders have been struggling with for years: how to get people moving.
Nintendo probably won't be solving the obesity crisis, but this game will definitely give ideas for the future of ways to promote exercise in a fun way that doesn't feel forced.
