Pokemon Go has everyone out and about. We're going for walks, joining teams, making new friends, and, in some cases, enraging one of most well-known homophobic churches, Westboro Baptist Church, by taking over their gym.
In probably one of the funniest headlines I've read all week, I discovered that one Pokemon Go user, Pinknose, decided to use the new app in a way that others in the area hadn't really thought of before. They used the app to fight bigotry while also having a good time.
As those of us that play Pokemon Go, we know that most gyms are churches or were churches, so it makes sense that Westboro Baptist Church would be a gym. What was a pleasant surprise was when Pinknose took over the gym with their Clefairy named LoveisLove.
And while I'm not on Team Instinct like Pinknose, I am all for fighting homophobia in a new fashion. It's a cute little Clefairy that passes on the message that love is love, and we shouldn't hate that.
While mot a particularly strong Pokemon with a combat power at only 120, but at a level 3 gym with other Pokemon around to back it up, it's definitely in a good place to remind the church known for hate that even the new app can work against them.
What is funnier than someone using Pokemon Go to stand up to Westboro Baptist Church is how the church responded. They decided to recruit another cute little pink puff ball to fight back, which didn't make much sense to me.
The church chose Jigglypuff to fight back with, which is probably the least scary Pokemon in my opinion and not the one I would choose to stand for a church that promotes bigotry and homophobia. Then again, I wouldn't choose any of the Pokemon to represent that, but Jigglypuff definitely doesn't seem intimidating.
Other people have followed the lead of user Pinknose and their Clefairy by using names that undermine Westboro Baptist Church's message such as "StopHate" or even "Satan". Admittedly, Satan isn't fighting hate but it is amusing. It's a nice way to fight back against hate in a fun way.
It's also a way that shows how Pokemon Go has brought people together in many ways as they wander around looking for rare Pokemon. They might battle for the church, but they are also using their battles to stand up to hate while still having fun.
So instead of fighting against each other, users have gone for the church to make sure that they don't actually get the chance to control it. The church has responded of course with Jigglypuff, but also by calling people and the Pokemon that control the gyms sodomites. Definitely a word I never saw being applied to Pokemon or Clefairy.
It's a fun and light-hearted challenge to the hate that Westboro Baptist Church likes to spew. Activism has never been this fun.
