Being an English major means that sometimes we have to step out of our comfort zones. One time I took a Creative Writing class and I was asked to create a sound poem.
A sound poem is a poem that is filled with onomatopoeia, and images that have similarities to sounds. I wasn’t exactly sure how I was going to pull that off, but after reworking the poem a million different times, I managed to create something that I ended up being a little proud of.
In this poem, I wanted to show that sometimes we wait for these big moments that seem loud and hard to ignore, but I don’t think that life works that way. I think the big moments happen when you aren’t looking for them. Sometimes they sneak up on you.
Personally, I think finding these little things in life is one of the most exciting comforts that we experience.
Now that you know a little bit about my poem, here it is!
My whole life I have been waiting on a bang
A sound so loud, the blood in my veins would ripple
I’ve waited for a moment so loud and clear
Like a gunshot booming through the air
Hitting the sky with a shake and a rumble
Like thunder cracking against the sky hitting sharply like a hand across skin
I’ve been waiting for a sound my whole life
Maybe the clanging of a church bell
Or a hum from the dryer machine
A sound so comforting it feels like home
A sound that won’t frighten me or
Cause me to plug my ears
Maybe the hum or the bang I’ve been waiting for is a voice.
A voice that sounds just like yours.
