March is Women's History Month and this entire month we are celebrating women who have brought great change and advancements throughout history. Strong willed women like Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Michelle Obama who have given voices to those who could not speak. On March 8th we celebrated International Women's Day, which recognized women from all walks of life. Many people showed their appreciation to the women important to them in their lives, and took the time to hear their stories. However, we must listen to their stories and appreciate the diverse qualities of women in our everyday lives, not just on one day. So I've decided to share a personal poem about three ordinary yet strong women.
Three generations
of strong women
One I've only known
from stories over dinner
and polaroids
showing where I acquired my sense of style
and love for vintage goods from
a woman who made cigarettes seem so classy
One I've known for fifteen years
who could compliment your every move
and quickly cut you down to size
all in an instance
a woman of grit
and of life
lived to its fullest
and yet not to its fullest
and one woman
who hasn't defined her divine qualities just yet
but has a whole world
at the soles of her very feet
three generations of women
sharing similar eyes
similar smiles
similar hopes and dreams
one woman lives through all three
