As I float away
In the dark
Black ugly ocean,
I can't help but float.
I am barely keeping my head above the black water.
It tastes like tears.
When lightning flashes, I can only just see the boat I was on, drifting further.
They are shouting on board.
They are pointing at a place, a patch of sun.
Away from the storm.
But I cannot reach them.
Every time I take a short breath above the surface,
Another dark, black, ugly wave
salty, tear-like water pushes me under again.
But my hand reaches above the surface.
I will not go under forever.
For I taught myself to swim.
