Poetry On Odyssey: For Once

Hard as it is to believe, there are gentlemen still out there.

There is no question that the world around us has changed. Along with that change, expectations of what to expect when dating. It's hard to find people with genuine care and respect. However, if you are lucky, you might still be able to find gentlemen. Men often confuse women for sexual objects and this is something I wrote to say that women deserve better than that. For once, I'd like to be the guy to show better than that. Henceforth, came this:


For Once

For Once, I'd like to take you out on a date,

I'd like to show that being a gentleman isn't lost in the generations, for we are not too late

For Once, I'd like to show that guys do listen,

I'd like to hear all the amazing things that make your smile perk and ears glisten

For Once, I'd like to be able to make you genuinely smile with laughter

I'd like to forever fill your heart with glee for years thereafter

For Once, I'd like to show that not everybody needs a stuntman

I'd like to show that anything you need I'll be there, I will because I can

For Once, I'd like to be the guy

I'd like to show you it's ok to cry

I'd like to be the one who sits there talking with you, or even in silence til' you're alright,

At least to make sure you're never alone, and you don't lay up crying at night

For Once, I'd like to be the guy who respects you for you,

I'd like to show that sex isn't something a man just needs to "get out of his system," You're a human too

For Once, I'd like to show that it's not my way or no way,

I'd like to show you everything you feel is valid, you do have a say

For Once, I'd like to show you

It's never me against you

I'd like to show you that in order to win, It's You & I against the problem

For if we never fix the issue, who is going to solve them?

For Once, I'd like to show you that you are capable of love

I'd like to show you it's what you deserve

I know you'd fight through wars for me, Even when I'm on your last nerve

Forever, I'd like to show you, that not all guys are the same

I'd like to love you, I'd love to love you,

And give you my last name

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
