All poetry is meant for personal interpretation. Whether you believe this is about the environment, or social issues, or a personal experience, that's OK. This is a poem for those who think the world owes them more than they owe it.
Entitled
The world owes you nothing.
The world owes you nothing, but it is full of knowledge, and of opportunity and of kindness, and these are all the weapons you need.
The world owes you nothing but you take anyways, because when knowledge is not enough there is ignorance, and when opportunity is not enough there is appropriation, and when kindness is not enough there is nothing left at all.
The world owes you nothing, but it will take everything, and you will give and give.
The world owes you nothing but it offers oblivion up,
and you swallow it down,
and stay waiting in the dark for the world to right itself.
except all gravity is gone. the future up ahead is dim and sorry.
but you are not, and the world owes you nothing.
The world owes you nothing.
The world owes you nothing, but you owe it everything. And for your refusal to save it, it will burn and burn.
