I know what you may be thinking, “How could a podcast about murder possibly be something that cheers you up?” Well, if you would let me get a word in, Patricia, I’ll tell you.
The podcast I’m referencing is called “My Favorite Murder” hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, assisted by their intern, Steven Ray Morris. The podcast was started in 2016 and consists of 119 episodes to date. The general formatting of the show is broken up into three sections. The first is some general small talk between Karen and Georgia as well as “Corrections Corner” in which they clarify or correct things they have gotten wrong in previous episodes. Then they move into the second section in which they read to each other their murder, true crime story, or survivor story for the week. Then to end the episode on a lighter note, the two move into “Fuckin’ Hooray” where they each share something that brings them joy such as a new book, movie, or television show they have recently started.
So, how does this podcast about murder cheer me up? Well for starters, Karen and Georgia are hilarious. They somehow perfectly blend comedy into something as dark as murder without coming off as insensitive towards the victims. They have insanely quotable dialogue that has turned into t-shirts and mugs alike. Some of my favorites are “Here’s the thing…Fuck everyone,” “You’re in a cult, call your dad,” and “Pepper spray first, apologize later.”
It’s also impossible to feel alone when listening to this podcast. The structure of their conversation and setting is so relaxed that it really feels as if you are in the room chatting with your two best friends. Additionally, the podcast itself has created an enormous fan base dubbed the “murderinos.” The main interactions occur on the Facebook page where murderinos can share their own hometown stories, close encounters, crafts, news stories, and more.
I would highly recommend this podcast to anyone who loves true crime, comedy, or both and I’ll leave you with the show’s classic sign off: Stay sexy, don’t get murdered.
