Hollywood isn't just for skinny, white actors anymore, in fact, representation in the media has been getting so much attention lately. Movies all across the board are becoming more diverse. Movies such as Love, Simon, Crazy Ritch Asians, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, as well as Netflix's newest movie Sierra Burgess Is A Loser are some examples of the upcoming diversity that is being seen in the media.

While it may not seem like it on the outside, "Sierra Burgess Is A Loser" is changing the way we should see the leading lady in a romantic comedy. Besides "Sierra Burgess Is A Loser", there is only one other movie out with a plus-sized leading lady, Love On The Run, however, another movie starring Rebel Wilson is in production and is set to come out in 2019, the film is titled Isn't It Romantic.

Plus-sized women are in Hollywood, but they are more likely to be seen in comedies and are sometimes referred to as the butt of a joke. In Pitch Perfect Rebel Wilson's character is called Fat Amy, which instantly makes her weight a contributing factor to her character. However, in just about every rom-com, the leading lady is often portrayed as a skinny, beautiful girl who should have no trouble finding love in real life, but "Sierra Burgess Is A Loser" shows how hard it is for a plus-sized girl to find love. If movies are becoming more diverse, than why aren't more plus sized girls seen as viable leads in movies that aren't comedies?

The beauty of "Sierra Burgess is A Loser" is that Sierra isn't this beautiful, skinny girl like the rest of her classmates. She wants to be confident in her body, but the guy she falls for is expecting her to be a perfectly skinny and beautiful girl. She immediately becomes terrified that if she reveals what she really looks like then the only romantic encounter that she has probably ever had will be taken away from her. That's an aspect that is never seen in a romantic comedy and it's almost refreshing.

As a plus-sized girl, I was so excited that I could finally watch a movie where the lead character resembles something close to me. Not every girl is a size zero, and it's so important that we show different body types in movies so that we can give people confidence in their bodies.

Representation goes far beyond a person's race or sexual identity, we should have people of all identities and sizes in media so that we can have a wider range of characters for people to love.
