Waiting tables and working in retail/customer service is a tough gig. You have to mentally balance the requests and demands of countless customers at once. You have to be on your feet for hours at a time with no breaks.
I remember when I worked at a restaurant some customers were not only very demanding towards how they wanted their food to be served to them, but some of them were incredibly rude towards staff. There was once a customer who was s angry about her food being overcooked that she stormed to the kitchen, where only employees were allowed, and pitched a fit.
Another customer asked for no pickles and when she discovered that there were pickles on her burger she threw them at the waitress instead of asking politely for the pickles to be removed. Many of the customers didn’t notice that the menu specifically said everything was a la carte meaning that each item had to be ordered separately. There were numerous times when a customer got frustrated because fries didn’t come with their meal when they were supposed to order it separately.
Working in retail and customer service is no different. Some customers will try to give employees a hard time just for the fun of it. These jobs are not easy and it only gets worse when a snobby customer tries to make it harder.
In the future, I ask that you treat workers and servers with respect. They’re on their feet all day, dealing with hungry and impatient people, usually for very low pay. Cut them some slack and just be nice to them (and make sure to tip too!), and it’ll go a long way. Treat your server like a human being, don’t be rude, leave a decent tip, don’t loiter at your table for two hours after your bill has been paid.
The last thing they need is to be treated like they’re inferior to you. They are your server, not your servant!
