Is there anything better than playoff hockey?
Honestly, I'd have to say no, there isn't.
Now, I'm not a diehard hockey fan. I love the Bruins and I'll root for them all season long. I'll catch a couple game here and there. I even got the chance to go and see one this year, but I am by no means a diehard fan. I don't own any merchandise, I never know their current record. Really, the only times I check on the B's are at the all-star break, and when it comes down to the wire and its time for them to make it into the playoffs.
Playoff hockey is a completely different story.
My roommates and I had the guys up in our room a couple weeks back. Just a chill night, and the Lightning/Redwings game was on. You know, the one where Abdelkader went absolutely bananas and murdered some guy on the Lightning?
Yeah, that one. I think that's when it initially hit me, that playoff hockey was such an intense, crazy time of the season. It's just an incredible piece of entertainment.
Last night, we were all watching the Caps/Pens game. Again, instant electricity. I mean like you could feel the tension in the air after each goal was scored, and no one in the room was rooting for either team. I mean, we have our favorites, but no one is a legitimate fan of either team. It was just that good.
(Seriously though, Holtby can probably save at least 30 shots while sleeping.)
When the T.J. Oshie scored the OT goal to finish his hat trick and seal the win for the Caps, it was insane. Like I'm talking we went off. Such an amazing finish. Again, no one is a fan of either team.
So, basically, playoff hockey is easily the most intense, entertaining, and exciting point of any sports season. I don't think any other sport (except maybe football*) has the power to bring non-fans in and watch with as much intensity as I have watched these few weeks of NHL playoffs. Bravo, NHL. I can't wait to see what this series between the Caps/Pens will bring.
*Football basically has made fans out of everyone in America, so I don't think it counts when I say it makes non-fans enjoy the sport. It doesn't really have non-fans. Playoff hockey wins, again.
