A Playlist For Change

Outlining the ups and downs of my first semester in college.

A Playlist For Change

So, here we are. Done with finals, and successfully on our way to the second semester of college. Our parents are ready to welcome us home for maybe even the first time since August. We have undoubtedly made changes to who we are, and we have actually became the adults we wanted to be in high school. I, for one, am writing this as I travel home from New York to Florida. I get to see my old friends from high school, my twin sister who goes to a different college, my adult brother, and my parents. I get to see my girlfriend, who I've grown even closer to despite a 939.5 mile long distance relationship. We all had a different story this semester and this year. Personally, I used music to get through the hard times, and the amazing times. I just wanted to share with my audience my go-to playlist for the first semester, in hopes that the music can speak to all people going through a change, as they undoubtedly will as the new year comes. Enjoy.

1. "The Start of Something" - Voxtrot

"Is this the end
Or just the start of something really, really beautiful"

2. "Come Back When You Can" - Barcelona

"You left your home
You're so far from
Everything you know"

3. "Night Sky" - Roses Gabor

"Gone in the night, the time flowing by"

4. "Day Dreams" - Midi Matilda

"Count on my dreams, like a dream, ought to be followed"

5. "Are You Looking After Yourself" - Courtney Barnett

"You should start some sort of trust fund just in case you fail"

6. "A Little Lost" - Sufjan Stevens

"I'm a little lost without you. That could be an understatement"

7. "Best of Friends" - Palma Violets

"I wanna be your best friend"

8. "Taxi Cab" - Twenty One Pilots

"Am I alive and well or am I dreaming dead?"

9. "Home By Now" - Bombay Bicycle Club

"...and you know and they're begging 'come home'"

10. "No Mind No Money" - Beach Baby

"I have no mind no money"

11. "Coffee" - Sylvan Esso

"Wild winter, warm coffee
Mom's gone, do you love me?"

12. "Art Isn't Real (City of Sin)" - Deer Tick

"But right now you're halfway around the world,
Maybe I'll see better days, but I'm not so sure I will."

13. "All the Places" - MADEINHEIGHTS

"In the city, all the voices, bold and busy is my type"

14. "I Found A Reason" - Cat Power

"Oh I do believe
In all the things you see
What comes is better
Than what came before"

15. "Don't Let It Pass" - Junip

"But don't let it pass
Don't get locked in
Everything starts
Way from within"

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
