My Plans For Summer 2016
Jonathan Pflegl

Well, summer is finally here! I just recently completed all of my 2015-16 classes from Regent University, and I couldn’t be more relieved. I worked really hard and persevered through these challenging courses, and now I can relax. Or so I think. Now that I am home, there are things I have to do/things I want to do before I head back to Regent in August. Examples of things I have to do include mowing the lawn and watering plants and flowers. Here are more things I would like to accomplish while I am in the state of New York:

Work Out- Get in top peak condition

While I was at Regent, I never really got a chance to go to a gym and do some exercising. I had to work out at my apartment, mainly doing pushups, crunches and tricep extensions. These helped, yet I still didn’t feel bulked out like the rest of my Regent friends. Now that I am home in New York, I have the opportunity to go to a gym, such as Planet Fitness, and continue the process of working out and getting into shape. One downside, though, I do not have my driving license yet, so I cannot drive myself to the gym. I would have to rely on one of my family members to drive me, or I would have to stay at home and do a workout in the basement. Still, I have plenty of time to get this situation figured out. I am not concerned.

Get my Driver’s License

Back in the Summer of 2013, shortly after I graduated high school, I took my written driver’s test and got my learner’s permit. To this day, I still own it. I have been taking driving lessons to improve and practice my driving skills, and these sessions have been helpful. In spite of all this, I still do not have an official license. A lot of my Regent friends have their license and their own cars, and it bothers me that I do not. I’ve had to rely on friends such as Jacob Sterle to get to or from the Regent Campus, as well as the Regent University Shuttle. But I am not satisfied. This year, I aim to take my road test and, hopefully, be a licensed driver.

Get a Part-Time Summer Job

College is expensive. Having to pay for classes and housing is never cheap. That is why it is important to work part-time and get paid so that this money can be used to help pay for college expenses. Every day, I thank God for my awesome parents who worked (and still work) long hours every day to provide financial support for their son. In the past, I have worked two part-time summer jobs. The first one at a miniature golf and restaurant business called Pirate’s Hide-Out (it did not last long, only two months), and the other job was at my local church, Solid Rock Family Church. I enjoyed both experiences. Having money is also good for spending. For instance, going to a movie or out to lunch requires bringing extra cash. It always a good idea to bring extra cash.

And so, summer 2016 is going to be a great one. These three things are going to be beneficial to my life, and I can’t wait to get started. Yet, I also know that I cannot do anything without seeking the Word of God. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things(the pagans seek) will be added to you”(Matthew 6:33).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
