When I was younger, I witnessed my Mom get bit by our family’s Akita. Growing up, I always loved animals, even dogs, but there was always hesitation whenever I was around them. No matter how much I told myself that I was not scared, I always had a natural reaction to flinch at them, especially the bigger dogs.
It may have been my subconscious reflecting on the memory of my Mom getting bit right in front of me. Either way, it always bothered me that I had this natural instinct to shy away. Then, a little fur ball came into my life and I fell in love.
Before I knew it, I was on the other side of things, watching people shy away as soon as they heard me say “Pit Bull mix,” when asked what kind of dog he was.
My heart always sank as his floppy ears would bounce as he turned his head in sadness, trying to figure out why they did not want to play with him anymore. They acted as if a two-pound puppy could do them such harm.
I have listened to people tell me how vicious of a breed Pit Bulls are, how dangerous they can be. But all I see is the attention they crave. Pit Bulls, or sometimes called a "pitty," deserve love and a family just as much as any other dog breed. Media has put a bad name on Pit Bulls, the breed that was once America’s dog. Here are 10 reasons why they should not be a breed that is feared, but a breed that can be shown love and kindness.
1. Those faces
How can you resist those goofy, adorable, sweet faces? Just makes you want to kiss them all day long.
2. The cuddles
Pit Bulls are notorious cuddlers! And for some sitting on top of you still is not close enough!
3. The kisses
Some pitties have soft, gentle kisses, while others will slobber you to a wet pulp. Either way, how can you say no!
4. You will always be entertainted.
Pit Bulls are always viewed as strong, aggressive dogs. In reality, they are some of the goofiest pups! They may a strong exterior but they are often very clumsy and bashful!
5. You will always feel safe.
With a dog that loves you like a Pit Bull can, you can always be sure you are safe from any intruders or unexpected guests.
6. But sometimes you have to be the brave one.
Do not let the strong physique and spiked collars fool you. These pitties are not always the bravest of the bunch. Sometimes, even a broom is enough to scare them off!
7. Sleepy pitties
Just when you thought Pit Bulls could not get any cuter. And like any other dog owner, you must take a million photos to document their cute slumber.
8. They are adventure pups!
Pit Bulls are very active dogs and are always up for a fun outing. Whether it is to the beach, on hikes, or for a little road trip, they will always be at your side, ready to experience new things with you.
9. One Word: PUPPIES!
Puppies, in general, are a huge source of happiness, no matter what breed! But Pit Bull puppies? They are out of this world adorable.
10. They are family.
A dog is part of the family, no matter what breed they are. They will depend on you to take care of them, to show them right from wrong, and to love them with all your heart.
Throughout history, Pit Bulls have been taught by humans to be cruel and vicious. They have been taught to fight other dogs and be aggressive. That is what we turned these dogs into, introducing them to blood sports in the 1800s and dogfighting in the late 20th century.
Now, it is our turn to not only give these dogs a second chance but to give ourselves a second chance to teach them what it is like to be loved. It is our responsibility to not give up on these animals that have not always been raised the right way because upbringing has a major impact on behavior.
I have watched my little Pit Bull be the goofiest dog, falling over his own two feet. I have also watched him try to protect his family whenever someone he did not know entered the house or approached us outside.
I have been blessed to have this “dangerous” breed drown me in slobbery kisses whenever he saw me cry. I have cradled him to sleep next to me because being in between his Mommy and Daddy is his favorite spot. I have witnessed other dog breeds that are expected to be “less of a threat” attack my dog, as my pitty runs away in fear, mostly under my legs.
Every dog is unique. Every dog has its own personality. Any individual dog has the ability to become vicious, defensive, and even just a loud barker. Pit Bulls should not all be labeled as vicious, dangerous, lethal, and a threat.
They all need to be given a chance to show how loving, caring, kind, and goofy they really are. It is time the world stops fearing Pit Bulls and starts to recognize them for how great of a pet, friend, and family member they can be.
