Call me a feminist. Say that I'm complaining. Call it whatever. Bottom line is that anything is possible and that strength has no gender.
It's the 21st century and today, we see more women running for President. More women working alongside men for ConEdison and more of them becoming police officers, firefighters and equally serving the country.
We see less stay-at-home mothers, more single mothers and more women walking around with suitcases. In just a matter of seconds, these women can remove their professional outfits to become the mothers that children await for at home and the wives that care for their husbands.
If you ask me, I will tell you that I know how to put make up on but I will also say that I can put any piece of furniture together.
I have no muscles but I can build them at any given time and even when they're not present, I can still carry heavy stuff too.
I can also sleep for hours but let me tell you, I am more than capable of working 14-16 hour long shifts.
I wear pink and no, I am not weak. I am a woman.
According to the United States Department of Labor, in 2014, 57 percent of women of 16 years and over were employed in comparison to a 69.2 percent of men; that’s a difference of 12.2 percent. So why is it that women only make .70 cents per every dollar men make?
It is time for society to stop making this acceptable. Though gender equality is still far from being accomplished, we deserve equal pay. If society is still not ready to recognize women’s effort to succeed and how we contribute to society we deserve something else in return. We deserve to be fairly compensated for our long hours of work. We deserve to be recognized, because women leave their families at home and sacrifice to provide for them.
And women, put on you big-girl panties and don’t tolerate any labels. Fight for what we deserve. Let us not forget our history and remember our Women Suffrage of the mid-19th century. Those women were fighting for us because they too, believed that we deserve more.
Think of the wonders we do. Think of the love and care we provide. Think of the intelligence that we hold in our brains and how we can also become CEO's if that's what we strive for. Think of us as the future successful women that we strive to be.
Don’t let society refer to you as bossy when they mean leader. Or selfish when you are being dedicated to your career. Or pushy when you are trying to be persuade something.
It is time for change. It is time for equal pay!
So next time you think that women are weak, think twice and double check on the definition of weak. Don’t underestimate us.
