12 Breath Photos From My High School Photojournalism Portfolio
Lauren Hernandez

In high school, I received college credit for a year-long AP course. The class was called AP Studio Art and it was one of the only classes I took in high school that encouraged creativity.

This class helped advance my skills in photography, which is one of the many elements of my major: journalism.

In the course, we were asked to pick a concentration where we had a theme for 12 images. I focused on different states of the mind.

You read about and look at these 12 images by clicking this link: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/high-school-photography-portfolio

In the listicle following, you can see the other half of my portfolio known as the breath collection.

Pictures of Girls

Pictures of Girls - Wallows

Lauren Hernandez

This picture was taken at a local ice cream shop named Vic's Ice Cream in Sacramento, CA of my friend Nicole! It is one of the pictures I am most proud of in this collection.

Don't Look Back In Anger

Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis

Lauren Hernandez

This picture was taken in Land Park! It definitely stood out when editing all the pictures from that day.

Under Cover of Darkness

Under Cover of Darkness - The Strokes

Lauren Hernandez

This picture was taken of my friend Juliette. We were at an exclusive art exhibit called Art Hotel, which was only open for a limited time. It was very hard to get in and you were only allowed fifteen minutes inside. We were able to get a few great pictures during that time.

Cast No Shadow

Cast No Shadow - Oasis

Lauren Hernandez

This photo was taken on a walk to find the perfect mural. Instead we found a picture perfect alleyway.

Ill Be Waiting

Ill Be Waiting - RAT BOY

Lauren Hernandez

This photo was completely unplanned, which makes it even better. We were in the middle of a photoshoot with some friends and it completely started pouring. The weather definitely adds to the emotion of the image.

Fluorescent Adolescent

Fluorescent Adolescent - Arctic Monkeys

Lauren Hernandez

Some of the best images are unplanned. After we completed a photoshoot, my friend Bailey and I went to an ice cream shop called The Parlor. We happened to find this awesome sign next door to it.

Disappoint Me

Disappoint Me - Hockey Dad

Lauren Hernandez

We were taking a little break from our photoshoot trying to find new places to shoot. I couldn't help, but take a picture at this location. The expression matched so well with the words on the poster.

Sea

Sea - Roosevelt

Lauren Hernandez

"Who made part, the sky, the sea
So the fall, for the laugh, with me"

In Love With A Camera

In Love With A Camera - The Struts

Lauren Hernandez

I chose the title, "In Love With A Camera" after one of my favorite songs. I also chose the title because that is exactly how her pose is. Her face is so intrigued with the camera that you almost don't notice the distorted background.

Tongue Talk

Tongue Talk - The Holidays

Lauren Hernandez

Another photo of my friend Juliette at the Art Hotel. I love the facial expression in contrast with all the words.

Young & Dangerous

Freak Like You - The Struts

Lauren Hernandez

"Never change us
Young and dangerous
Mama, it's true
'Cause I'm a freak like you
Yeah, I'm a freak like you
We're all just ugly, pretty, nasty, it's cool"

Blue Moon

Blue Moon - Beck

Lauren Hernandez

"I'm so tired of being alone
These penitent walls are all I've known
The songbird calling
Across the water
Outside my silent asylum
Oh, don't leave me on my own
Left me standing all alone"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
