While on assignment for a film collective, I found myself on a plane to Miami Beach, Florida. I'll be talking about how I captured shots down there, some of my favorite tactics for shooting, and my adventure with a camera I'm much less familiar with: The Sony A7ii.
Palm trees are so great to shoot, most likely because I don't see them every day. Regardless, I love to underexpose them slightly to make them pop against the sky. As seen below, sometimes I underexposed by two or three stops to make them silhouette which can be really pleasing.
While I primarily shot film, (hence being on assignment) I did get to know my sony a little better. The mirrorless is fairly new to me, but one thing I love about it is its compatibility with shooting my vintage lenses. Because of this, it makes an excellent travel companion since it and my Leica M6 can share glass.
Check out the lovely color renditions in the images below.
Of course, while I was down on the south side, I made sure to shoot some Black and White, which if you follow any of my work, you'll remember how much I love black and white for architecture and structural work. (Ironically, not for the above shot though due to the close temperatures between the rings and the asphalt.)
Overall, Miami was great to shoot. There's a lot of culture there, and I was able to capture a lot of that on film. Along the way, I was able to get to know my mirrorless more and grab some nice shots to remember my time there.
