The National Hockey League is going into its third month of the regular season. It's still early and there are a lot more games to be played until the Stanley Cup contest in early June. The Philadelphia Flyers haven't been showing strong during the beginning of their season like they should be. Here's my coverage on the Flyers season thus far and their potential to skate into the playoffs.
The Flyers won their first game of the season thanks to Wayne Simmonds scoring a hat trick during two power plays. Their second game they lost in a shutout. For the remainder of October it was really a guessing game on wether they would play as well as they did during their first game or play as badly as they did during their second game.
Throughout November they had a very sad 10 game losing streak that finally broke through when they won against the Calgary Flames 5-2. It was definitely hard to watch them get so close to winning during some of those games and then ultimately losing their momentum and giving up.
Claude Giroux is in his 6th year as holding the captain title for the Flyers. His leadership skills on and off the ice makes their 10 game losing streak a thing of the past. Since then they are now on a three game winning streak beating the opposing team with more than two goals every game. Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek work so well together as left and right wing respectively. Voracek is leading the team in assists with 30 of them, while Giroux is leading the team in goals with 12 of them.
Their statistics overall aren't the best but they could be way worse. 31 teams in the league and the Flyers are 20th in goals per game and 14th in goals against. I think the focus right now should be bettering their offensive and maintaining their strong defense. Even though they have a young defense with four of their defensemen not even having at least 3 years of professional playing experience, they are using this year as a learning curve and to eventually become a stronger team.
As for the playoffs... who knows what could happen? While the Flyers missed the playoffs three of the last five seasons, I think they can regain their power and move up in the metropolitan division. They are second to last right behind the Pittsburgh Penguins who ironically are not having the best start to their season either. The playoffs seem so far away, but the season always manages to fly by.
Philadelphia fans are some of the most loyal fans out there. I'm sure every city says that about their fans, but until you go and watch a Flyers game live, then you can really understand what I mean by "loyal" fans. How great would it be if the Flyers stepped up their game like the NFL Philadelphia Eagles have.
If you're a Flyers fan, don't give up on them just yet. Their potential is there and so is the chance of making it to the playoffs!
