As a student at the University of South Florida, my major is Biomedical Sciences, underneath the Chemistry department. I love my major; however, there are parts of being a pre-med student that are less than favorable. I know for certain that my family members have heard some of the complaints stemming from my choice in study! So here are the top 10 pet peeves of a pre-med student.
1. Long Lab Hours
Believe me, spending two hours and 50 minutes in a lab is way less fun than it sounds.
2. Fine Arts Requirements
This speaks for itself, why should I have to take a ceramics or painting class if I'm going to med school?
3. Cumulative Finals
Absolutely! I love taking a cumulative final with every single piece of hard information we've covered in Cell and Molecular Biology... not.
4. Research
This isn't mandatory, but if you want to get into an all-star med school? Best believe you'll be doing some research if you can find it.
5. Volunteering and Shadowing
This one isn't a pet peeve so much as it's long and tedious at times. But, it's one of the more rewarding aspects of being a pre-med student.
6. Extracurriculars
Extracurricular activities are what people like the med school interviewers look for! It only makes sense to join as many as you can without having your grades suffer, right?
7. Two Words: Organic Chemistry
All I can say is good luck buddy....
8. Group Projects
You try your best, but either you do it mostly on your own and delegate, or you sink like the Titanic.
9. Working a Job?
Oh yeah, you have bills to pay! Have fun trying to balance everything with your school work. It takes a truly dedicated person with very little sleep to make working a decent job mash well with a pre-med major's schedule.
10. Study, Study, Study
This, this is the ultimately necessary evil required to keep your GPA up to par.
