#StandWithKeaton, we've seen it all over the Internet from our friends and our favorite celebrities. And, we all stood up until we found out that his mom posted photos on Facebook with the Confederate flag and found out that her son was bullied for allegedly calling one of his classmates the n-word. Understandably there is controversy surrounding this and if we should still #StandWithKeaton if his mother is a racist and if he was bullied for being a racist. So, here is my take on things.
We have learned that prejudice attitudes are a learned behavior. It's in psychology textbooks everywhere and as a psychology major currently taking Adolescent Psychology and Introduction to Psychology, I would know--I've read it twice. But the main thing is that if his mother is a racist, we shouldn't punish her son.
Yes, if he did call one of his classmates a derogatory racial term, he is wrong, but instead of dismissing his bullying, we need to act in love. You can't fight hate with more hate. And, you can't fight ignorance with more ignorance. The brave celebrities of color, who still stand with Keaton are the real angels because they realize that rescinding their offers aren't going to help Keaton or his mother or help eradicate the racial divide within our country that is now growing due to the current administration. We have seen that if you fight hate with love, you can overcome and make strides for your cause.
To piggyback off of the point that if you fight hate with hate nothing will be achieved, the kids who retaliated against Keaton are still bullies. Again, if Keaton did call one of the kids the n-word, it is disgusting and wrong and he should be punished by the school accordingly for his vocabulary. But, two wrongs do not make a right. I have been called that same derogatory term in the past and I was hurt by it. However, I was raised by a mother who has seen the effects of racism and has taught me that retaliating is only going to make the prejudice person's feelings towards me and my race, right.
Never feed into the stereotypes! Rise above.
Bullying is bullying and bullying is wrong!
Rise above the hate and educate Keaton! Don't make fun of his looks, don't put ham down his clothes, and do not assault him with milk.
Let me remind everyone that two girls of color recently committed suicide because of their bullying and they did not receive as much media attention as Keaton did. Yes, although Keaton's mom did post the video and her son did have a positive outlook on his bullying at the end of the video, which is great because he knows that he will rise above the bullying and bullies will go nowhere in life, he did not take it to the step of suicide.
These two young women of color were also bullied and, again, bullying for whatever reason is wrong. They thought that the only way to escape their bullying was to end their own lives. We should be shedding a light on all three victims, not just one! Yes, Keaton is an outlier because he is a boy that is being bullied and not a girl. He is also an outlier because he is white. But the main thing is that all three of them should be equally recognized by the media because all three of them can teach kids and society a lesson about bullying.
