Being a college student means that you experience a whirlwind of emotions every single day. Week after week, you're guaranteed to face new challenges and stresses. That's why it's so important to have the space to unwind. Even the most extroverted among us will relate to this. In my first year at URI, I was able to find a small handful of places where I was able to focus and just have time to myself.

NOTE: While these places are specific to the URI, most colleges will have an equivalent on their campus.

Library Study Room

If you're able to snag a private study room in the library, I highly recommend doing so. These are perfect if you want complete privacy for studying, but can't stand the complete silence of the third floor. I can't ever in complete silence, so these rooms are perfect. The outside noises provide a calming environment, but the single-person workspace allows me to get work done.

Dorm Lounges

For me, the absolute worst place for me to get work done is in my dorm room. The reason being, I associate that room with sleeping and occasional social interactions. If I tried to get work done in there, I wouldn't ever get anything important done. That's why I usually find someplace to set up in the library.

However, there are a few reasons as to why going to the library isn't practical. If it's raining, or it's laundry day, or I'm really just not feeling my best, I won't want to walk across campus to the library. That's why I'll set up in the lounge in my dorm. It's a larger space, and there's very rarely anyone in there to distract me.

Ram's Den

Ram's Den is a small cafe-type area next to one of URI's main dining hall facilities. While Ram's Den is (predictably) more crowded than other spaces on this list, most people there are on the same page in terms of social interaction:

Order/receive their food, then either leave or shuffle over to your group of friends. You'll likely be left alone if you don't want to be bothered. Since it's also a cafe, there is the added bonus of being able to get food. You can get coffee, a smoothie, or pizza, then go back to your table and spend the evening working on your lengthy final portfolio for your Writing class.

The 24-Hour Room

Much like Ram's Den, the 24-Hour Room in the library is filled with people, but at the same time, you won't necessarily be bothered. Most people in that space are actively trying to get work done, so you can do the same peacefully. During the day, the cafe in the 24-hour room offers coffee and snacks, so you can re-energize while you study.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
