First of all, let me start off by explaining to those who do not know what perpetual reconfiguration is. The idea of perpetual reconfiguration is that there is a constant change of oneself and it is usually compared to the world around us.
When we have explorations of the unknown, we are able to come to perpetual reconfiguration. And through that, new possibilities emerge for knowing oneself and the world around us. New things about our world are being discovered everyday and we, as people, are evolving and adapting to those newfound changes and ideas.
One thing that is evident is that outside changes do not stop; the world continues to evolve around us. Technology has grown, society has grown, and people have grown with it. And if we become uncomfortable with the constant changes around us we can stop changing. Let me give you an example:
Technology in the world is constantly getting better and better and there are people who evolve and move with it, but there are also people who do not evolve with it and those people stay stagnant. For example; my grandmother is up to date with technology. She has and uses a computer, an iPhone, and even an iPad. But my grandfather, her husband, rarely uses any of those. He does not use anything but a house phone and I have never seen him use a computer. Therefore, he did not evolve with the technology like my grandmother did, he stopped the perpetual reconfiguration and now he is stagnant.
This shows us that we all have a choice, we can either reconfigure as the world continues to change or we can stay stagnant and watch the world continuously change. This is not like a true or false or multiple choice question on a test.
There is no right or wrong answer. You are able to decide for yourself what you want to do. You can reconfigure or you could not reconfigure. With reconfiguration you are following with the changes of the world and the people around you and if you decide you are done reconfiguring and you stop changing with the world, the world will not wait for you, it will go on without you and leave you behind.
I am not trying to make this sound like a bad thing. If we look back at my grandfather, he is very happy with how he is living his life. He does not need the technology to live a happy life. We can also look at other countries and compare them to the United States. For example, we can look at Costa Rica.
This is a country that I have been to multiple times. Compared to the United States, they are not as advanced with technology as we are, but they are happy with their lives and how they live.
Perpetual reconfiguration is neither good nor bad, neither right nor wrong. It is a persons’ decision on how they want to live. Some people are happy with being engulfed by technology while others are happy with taking a step back from the abundance of technology. We all have the choice to make. It is really about what we are comfortable with and what we are not comfortable with. It is also about more than just configuring with technology.
Just going through our daily lives is a way for perpetual reconfiguration. We went from day care to elementary school to middle school to high school to college and so on. We reconfigure to a lot in our lives and there are things we do not reconfigure with and that is okay.
