As we journey through life we experience many milestones. For high school students one milestone is prom, the time to celebrate with friends the end of one journey to embark on the beginning of a new journey. As we see in today’s generation, the traditional attire for prom has evolved into more than just a typical sparkly dress, ball gown or elegant princess gown, but into a way to incorporate a different culture into a person’s own personal style.
In light of prom season and my younger sister ending her time as a high school student, I would like to reflect on her prom dress. Her experience to find the perfect dress was rather challenging. She wanted a one-of-a-kind dress that made her stand out in her own unique way, something that spoke for itself about who she is. In order for her to achieve this goal she decided the best thing to do was to design her own dress and have it specially made. This included the style of dress, the fabrics and all the little details. As Rachel Zoe once said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak,” and that is exactly what my sister did with her prom dress. Below is a picture of my sister on her prom day:
On her prom day she looked like royalty, an African queen, and it was sure that she did stand out like she had hoped to. Her date even had matching accent pieces to compliment her dress. She stated, “Prom was a dream come true and her dress was everything she hoped for.” While the dress was her own design, she could not have accomplished this look without the help of a man named Khadim. Khadim is a small business owner located in Memphis, Tennessee. He runs a small store called Khadim Fashions where he does alterations and customizations, makes accessories and designs his own clothing to sell in his store. Most of his designs focus on the African culture and he uses African print to make majority of his clothing. While his focus is mainly in women’s wear he is not limited to just that. He also designs clothing for men and makes men accessories, such as bow ties. Recently he has decided to expand his business and will be moving his store to a bigger location. At this new location he plans to start offering sewing classes at the start of June for people who are inspired to create their own designs.
Although my sister’s prom dress was a success there were some cons to seeking Khadim’s services. The biggest negative issue that she came across when getting her dress was that it was not ready when he said it would be. It took him three extra days to finish it abd when he set a new time for the dress to be picked up it was never ready; he would start working on it upon her arrival for pick up. Though she ran into these issues everything was still a success.
