We the People Will Prevail

I refuse to run away from Trump; we will support one another and take a stand.

Oh dear god.

I can’t believe I’m saying this: Donald Trump was just elected as President of the United States. Along with a large portion of America, I am absolutely appalled. More than that: I’m frightened, and I’m devastated. I am crying and yet I am numb. I can't even begin to truly process what this means.

There is a part of me that wants to flee the country. There is a part of me that wants to disengage entirely, and simply ignore it all; to hide in a cave and neglect to reemerge until 2020.

And then there’s the part of me that knows that, even if it were possible for me to become a Canadian citizen tomorrow, I would most likely turn the opportunity down. I love my country; my people. I could never abandon my home in our most vulnerable moment.

After all, I am privileged. I am cis-gender, white, middle class, and (as far as I know) straight. The only things I really have going against me are my gender, perhaps my spirituality, and the student debt I’m currently accruing. If anyone can afford to stand up and fight, it’s me.

I’m not calling for anyone to take up arms (please don’t). But we will have to stand together and protest every discriminatory policy proposed, every instance of corruption we witness, and every local politician who follows suit. We will have to work to eradicate the ignorance that has lead a large portion of our country to blame its issues on those deemed as “other”, rather than those in positions of power. We will have to inform our representatives of exactly how we feel.

To all my friends who are of color, LGBTQ+, Muslim, disabled, or of any other intersection: I stand with you. If you need someone to vent to this week (or month or year or lifetime), my ear is always available. I pledge to do what I can to protect and uplift you, and to respect your experiences and autonomy. And when I inevitably screw up, I pledge to do my best to learn from my mistakes and better myself.

To my male friends with perhaps fewer intersections: I hope you will support me, too.

For we know what the real America is. America is a vibrant conglomerate of cultures, ideas, and identities. America is young people of completely different backgrounds supporting one another.

We are America.

Together, we are beautiful.

Together, we will prevail.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
