I've gotten to the point where I don't want to discuss my major anymore. If all you're going to do is look at me with pity or judgment then why would I bother telling you? Lately, as I've been meeting new people and answering the basic get-to-know-you questions, I've been getting a lot of weird looks when I tell them I'm an advertising major.
Sometimes it'll be talking to other students who are, say, pre-med or business majors. Sometimes it'll be talking to adults that ask the follow-up question, "Ohhhh what do you want to do with that?" I want to live my life doing something that I love, that's what I want to do with that. Is that okay with you?
Why is it okay for someone to think they're better than someone else based on what they're majoring in? Every college student still has mountains of homework, quizzes and tests. Every college student still gets stressed out because of their classes. Just because my homework looks different than yours doesn't mean it's any easier.
And does anyone ever stop to think that the world needs someone to have this job or be in this field? People judge fine arts majors all the time, but how do most us of unwind after a long day at work or school? We pop in a movie or binge-watch our favorite show. Further still, they're mad when someone has a bad performance in a play or a movie. Well, how do you think they get better? Oh right, they go to school for that.
I know people say they hate ads all the time, but if you told me you've never been emotionally impacted by a commercial, you'd be lying. Somebody always has to do the job.
Next time you find yourself judging someone based off of their major or their career, pause and picture walking a mile in their shoes. Every single person is different and has different talents. We all spend hours doing homework, honing our skill and studying. Why does the subject matter make a difference?
I'd much rather have someone judge me based off of how hard I worked than on what the subject matter was. Not that you should be judging anyone at all, but if you are, judge individuals on their work ethic, not what you perceive their skill level or intelligence is. That's not your place.
