A lot has gone through my mind lately. My mom just recently asked me, if I wish I didn't pursue my English major.
Okay. Let's start with this. I complain a lot. School gets to me, but I appreciate it. My business and English majors have taught me things that I would have never experienced if I were to choose one. Is it a little more difficult? Yes. Is it doable? Absolutely!
Each major has a different community of people, but I want to focus on the pros of my English major. Many people look at me strangely and any person within this field, as if they have gone insane. They ask thereafter, what are you going to do with that?
To be honest, it does a lot!
Do you want to know?! I'll tell you what I have gained.
English is a comfortable space for presentations that most of the time is about group presentations. One business class of mine focused on this idea, and it is super important to learn to coordinate and work as a team.
You learn to listen to other people's ideas and perspectives that aren't black and white. In business, numbers are numbers and facts are facts. In English, we learn to critically analyze ideas, be creative, be open minded, and grasp far-fetched ideas.
We read. We read a lot! A lot is an understatement. Others may shudder and think it's impossible to read so much and fit that in your day.
I admit, it can be a lot, but it is to the student's benefit. We learn history, culture, and perspective just by reading one book! We dig into the past, to gain an understanding of the writer's knowledge. Not all relevant things today had the same relevance back then. Things had different meanings, lifestyles, and people.
Without English, I would have lost all of that. Not to mention, I would have to take electives in college. Personally, I'm not a big fan and would have been a little sad taking a volleyball class for one credit or so. I'm not about easy, I just want to get it done and learn. I have benefited from both majors, but English is not a waste of time. It builds every skill you could need in presenting yourself and being able to verbally express yourself.
Don't freak out about essays. Like any other thing in the world, it takes practice and no one is going to be perfect coming in. People grow with others within their classes, that have different backgrounds and knowledge in different pieces of literature.
Your opinion matters!
So, am I happy that I pursued English? I think you know the answer.
