'Pennies From Heaven'

From that moment on, I was a firm believer that I, too, receive beautiful messages from heaven.

We all latch on to the idea that after death, the people we love are still watching over and guiding us. Some believe that their souls are in a completely different place, while others look for constant signs that their loved ones are still with them. I believe that spiral signs do exist and that they come in many different forms. They can be anything from visits from cardinals and butterflies to continually seeing a sentimental number.

I first time I heard of the phrase "pennies from heaven", I didn't understand the full significance behind it or what it truly entailed. It was an expression that I had only heard occasionally throughout family conversation. It eventually turned into a belief my dad picked up, and not too soon after that, I did, as well.

I recently read an article written about my grandfather (my dad's dad). It went into detail about his life, his outstanding achievements, and his adamant personality that I have definitely (and wholeheartedly) inherited. The article was written by a woman who knew him for about 20 years. She explained that he would always come into her office on Thursday mornings, with pennies in hand, and claim that they were "good messages" sent from my grandmother, whom he had lost a few years prior.

It wasn't too long after my grandfather passed away in 2012 that my dad picked up the belief that pennies would be sent to us from heaven — specifically, from his parents. To this day, he still keeps the pennies that he has found over the years in a special place in our home.

The first time I ever experienced this incredible phenomenon for myself was while I was still in high school. I was late to school one morning and quickly ran into a nearby convenience store to grab a cup of coffee. As I approached the coffee counter, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something unusual. Three pennies sat perfectly in a line, almost as if someone had intentionally placed them there for me to come across. I thought to myself, "Finding a penny here or there isn't that unusual — but three?" From that moment on, I was a firm believer that I, too, receive beautiful messages from heaven.

To this day, I still come across the pennies that are sent to me from above. They always seem to greet me at a time of need, as if they know that the sight of them gives me such comfort. I almost seem to be refreshed by fact that I am blessed with such a gift. I often take pictures of the pennies sent to me from above and send them to my dad so that he knows that I, too, receive these beautiful messages. I know it makes his heart just as happy as mine to know that we share a belief in something so sentimental and meaningful.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
