The current political temperament has taken an incredibly strong toll on the population of Rollins College. Through activism both at rallies and in community based organizations, Rollins has demonstrated a deeply rooted sense of love for the entire community, especially during the time of the recent immigration ban on 6 Muslim majority countries.
Rollins, has a very interesting demographic ratio in terms of race, gender, immigration status, and political beliefs. Thus, as a college Rollins is considered to be extremely diverse. Though this may seem like an extremely positive attribute, it comes with a great deal of struggle during this political environment.
In January, Donald Trump issued an executive order to "temporarily ban travel from seven Muslim-majority countries", thus creating an even more polarized climate (NPR 2017). This thereby created a very awkward situation between the diverse varieties of students, especially between those who support and do not support Donald Trump. However, President Cornwell of Rollins College took immediate action after the executive order was stated. In an email sent to Rollins College, Cornwell stated that "international students" of all "nations" and "faiths" are welcome on campus, as this is the true definition of "pluralism" and true "inclusive democratic ideals" (Orlando Sentinel 2017). The issue of diversity and inclusion should not be a partisan issue. It should be based on common morality, and the idea of including every individual at Rollins regardless of where they originate from. Though this email was sent to attract the wide population of Rollins, another current action was taken to uphold and continue the values of inclusion through diversity.
Imagine Justice, an incredibly brilliant and recently opened organization on campus decided to create an event to honor diversity in light of all that is happening in the world right now. On February 24th, Imagine Justice held an active demonstration to support diversity on campus. The central goal for this demonstration was not to exacerbate the current divide, but to inherit and reinstate principles of inclusion.
The Board of Trustees were in a meeting in the Campus Center, and were greeted to a demonstration on their way out of the meeting. Rollins students quickly approached Trustees members and spoke to them about Rollins' reinstated values of inclusion through diversity. The purpose of this discussion with the Board of Trustees members was to invigorate them about Rollins College's impact of diversity and to get them talking about what steps they can further take to help support Rollins in our quest to a more inclusive environment. This was a very successful event, and each Board of Trustee member left with a flower with a message tied to it to help reinstated Rollins College, will always be UNITED.
In addition to the wide range of support from the Board of Trustee members of Rollins College, several news networks participated in reporting on behalf of the demonstration that took place.
The inspiring posters of Rollins students also brought a great detail of interest and attention to individuals passing by on campus. The posters: "United we stand", "Global Citizens= Pro Immigrant", and "thank you for protecting our global campus" all brought a sense of inclusion and firmness of Rollins College principles. The principle of "global citizenship through leadership" illuminated across campus, especially through means of this demonstration. Furthermore, the poster "everyone can find their anchor with us" proved the fundamental principle that Rollins is a campus aiming to create safety and security for all attending. Fiat lux, or "let there be light" shined throughout the course of the peaceful, pro-immigration demonstration.
