While popularity is usually a fascination of young teenagers who have nothing better to worry about through high school, it does have some merit in the world of politics. Of course, an unpopular politician would most likely not be an active politician for much longer if given a chance to be removed by a democratic vote. Interestingly enough America's least popular politician of as April 2017 is Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Honestly, that is quite a feat, he had to beat out our American president with an orange face and a history of pussy-grabbing, who gets his political ideology from "Fox and Friends." Seriously though I amazed Trump is not the least popular politician although the failure to pass the recent healthcare bill (AHCA) may have diminished respect for the speaker of the house, especially from that of his base and donors.
Before the AHCA bill failed to pass the senate Paul Ryan was hanging around a 33% approval rating. After the failure to pass the AHCA it has dropped to around 21% nationally. The only other politician to ever have an approval rating lower than Ryan's is former vice president Dick Cheney who amassed an 18 percent approval rating in 2002. One could wonder how one bill could make Ryan's approval rating drop around 12 percent. However, we must remember Paul Ryan has been complaining about the healthcare issue in America for seven years. All during the Obama administration day in day out he complained how Obamacare was the worst thing ever and it needed to be repealed and replaced. Seven years to think or draft a new healthcare system and after those seven years of corrosive negativity and empty criticism, he is being burned by his own actions. When given seven years to draft a single bill one would think he could draft a better more inclusive system. Sadly the bill put forth by Paul Ryan was nothing more than a giant middle finger to the elderly and the poor. This poor legislation draws fire from both the republican and democratic base alike resulting in such a low rating.
While I have hammered this point before in previous articles there is no point in not driving it home one more time. Paul Ryan is now the least liked politician in America, a republican speaker of the house who has both a republican majority in the senate and house is so massively disliked for not supporting universal healthcare. Funny enough the most liked and respected politician in the United States is an independent socialist and Jewish senator from Vermont named Bernie Sanders. This Vermont senator is a large promoter of a medicare for all, a decision which resonates well with almost all Americans and reflects in his approval rating at 61%.
