Patriot's Day. Annually the third Monday of April, this day commemorates the beginning of the Revolution in America, marking the region of the first battles at Lexington and Concord. Patriot's Day is a day Bostonians look forward to all year. It is a sign of summer, a chance to show Boston pride, and a day to celebrate independence. The iconic Boston Marathon is run on this day - occasionally referred to as "Marathon Monday". Families and friends gather to watch the Marathon and Red Sox game that annually take place early - mid morning. The day is filled with patriotic pride and community spirit. It is no secret that Patriot's Day has a slightly different feeling since April 15, 2013, but Bostonians are not ones to shy away. There is a stronger sense of patriotism, pride, and affinity for Boston and America as a whole. While remembering those we lost and the lives drastically changed since that day, Bostonians have continued to bolster the American spirit on Patriot's Day. If traveling into the city, you can see the eager participants training, months in advance. Braving the bitter cold, snow, and rain, runners step up to the plate and get their miles in all in preparation for the highly anticipated day of the year.
Patriot's Day is the only Monday Bostonians look forward to waking up for.
Until coming to college, I never realized that Patriot's Day is primarily a Massachusetts holiday. I always had Patriot's Day off of school and have always watched the Marathon. The day is a big deal to say the least around here, and coming to school to hear people ask, "What is Patriot's Day?" or, "Why do we have Monday off?" was surprising to me.
To partake in the Boston Marathon in some fashion is to immerse in something that is cornerstone to Boston culture. For out-of-staters to understand the caliber of importance this seemingly random Monday has on Massachusetts may be tough, but if they glance at the rich history and character of this city, there is no question why.
So, whether you're a native born and bred, a wannabe Bostonian, or a respectful visitor, be sure to tune into the Marathon. Donate, race, or support and strut your pride. Good luck to all the runners, and be prepared to embrace in this tremendous day with the city who started it all. #BostonStrong
