In this generation words have been formed around us. Words of beauty and words of hate. These words can lift each other up and some can tear each other apart. If you really think about it, words describe who we are as individuals. We can come up with really nice words for ourselves, but is that what others really think of us? Granted, some may have different opinion. The fact of the matter is that, are you really who you want to be?
Some students strive to do their best in everything they do. Those who spend their school days in the band room get labeled the “band nerd” and athletes who work extra hard in their weight room get called “jocks.” This also goes for the girls who wear too much makeup and get called ridiculous names. These individuals and many others get labeled for simply doing and expressing who they are and what they love. Unfortunately, these labels have caused some students to stop doing what they are passionate about.
This generation needs to stop labeling those around them, especially when those individuals are pursuing something they love. Someday, those band nerds are going to be playing in a symphony and are going to make a lot of money. Those jocks will eventually play professionally and those students who worked hard all throughout school are gaining valuable life experiences earlier than anyone else. While this generation is wasting time labeling others, it causes them to miss out on all of the other opportunities they could’ve had.
For those who have spent the time labeling others, you could've been searching for your dream job or started volunteering somewhere. You could've discovered something that you are passionate about instead of wasting time talking bad about those who have already found their passion. I'm not trying to be rude, but honestly why waste time talking bad about someone's passion when you can go out and discover something you love to do?
And to those who have been labeled, I’m here to tell you is that it doesn’t matter what others think about you. It doesn’t matter if you fit in. It’s only about what you think of yourself. If you know that you are doing something good for others and for yourself, that’s great. You have to be true to yourself and do what’s right for you. If you feel beautiful with all of that makeup and love to express yourself in ways no one has thought of, more power to you. Don't try to prove the labels wrong, just try to be true to yourself and what you are passionate about.
We need to start standing up for what we believe in and supporting one another. Not everyone is going to get along and not everyone is going to understand the other person’s decisions, but hiding our flaws and imperfections just to try to fit the mold of what this world holds isn’t going to get anyone far. This generation needs to find what they are passionate about and stop criticizing others for their passions.
