It's impossible to say that I myself would get back into something that I was very passionate about during my elementary school days while in college.
But alas, it happened.
So let's start off with a backstory about this thing that I loved to do called dance.
When I was five, I started doing dance classes at Step By Step Dance Academy in Avon, Ohio. It was a beginner ballet class and the dance was to "You'll Be in My Heart" from the movie "Tarzan." That song still makes me cry every time I hear it because it brings me back to a time when I was young and innocent and in a pair of ballet shoes. I would continue to do dance, and the following year I would do two dance classes, ballet and hip-hop. For six more years, I would do different level dance classes, do many recitals, and learn how to do quick changes.
My only regret was the year I decided to do three dance classes: ballet, hip-hop, and tap. But it was my fifth year doing dance and I wanted to challenge myself. After that, I did only one dance class a year.
My favorite dance style was tap. I don't know why, but since the year I started to do tap dance (the year the song I danced to was "Mr. Mom" and I met an old dance friend. Hi Kate!), I've always loved doing it.
However, I would only spend eight years at Step By Step because of deciding to do middle school basketball instead. I spent most of the winter during seventh grade going to dance class in my middle school basketball uniform. After an injury in eighth grade and then deciding to do marching band all four years of high school, I figured that dance was now just lost in the wind.
That was until I got to college.
During Campus Fest, I saw a table for an organization called University Dance Alliance. I decided to sign up for emails about what's going on with the organization in case I was interested in doing things. I was going to audition for the fall showcase, but spraining my knee during Quidditch tryouts stopped me from doing that.
So once my knee healed to its best capability, I decided to go to the Wednesday classes provided to learn different combos of different dance styles. I got to try dance styles that I never did before, like contemporary and jazz and got to do some that I have done in the past like hip hop and tap.
When auditions for the spring showcase came around, I knew that I was going to audition. But the weekend of auditions was the weekend I went home to be with my family after the death of my dog. So dance was something to take that off of my mind for a bit.
I then got an email to be in a jazz piece for the spring showcase.
After six weeks and with it being the week of spring showcase when I'm writing this, I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity to get back into dance.
So this is a thank you to University Dance Alliance for getting me back into dance and for bringing a love from years ago back into my life.
Another big thank you to Miss Carol, my dance teacher when I went to Step By Step, for bringing a love of dance to a tiny 5-year-old girl who didn't know how to dance at the time. I was thinking about you all throughout show week.
