For the past few weeks, current headlines have revolved around the contentious Alabama election. Roy Moore, America’s popular pedophile, is still considered to be the lead candidate even though five women as of now have come out with sexual harassment cases against him.
One of the women, Leigh Corfman, was fourteen years old at the time of the assault. But who cares that a thirty-year-old man “allegedly” groped a fourteen-year-old as long as they build the damn wall right Ann Coulter?
Since these allegations have come out, Moore supporters have united and struggled with varying difficulty to justify Moore’s actions. Obviously, we have our usual victim blaming and slut shaming. But now the party of faith has exceeded itself and quoted actual scripture to warrant Moore’s actions. I mean if virgin Mary and Joseph can have Jesus imagine what Moore’s semen could create.
Regardless of the levels, they stooped too to justify it, it's apparent how easy it is to turn a blind eye to pedophilia as long as they vote for tax reforms and keeping refugees out right? For example, while the Roy Moore allegations unfolded, Hollywood was going through a semblance of its own purge.
More and more actors and actresses came out against prominent Hollywood members including Harvey Weinstein and Louis C.K. Fox News zealously reported on how Harvey Weinstein and the rest of those Hollywood liberals were disgusting hypocrites that didn’t know how to treat women.
Fox New’s pride and joy Bil O'Reilly also just settled a 32 million payout in a sexual harassment case but I digress. Yet Hannity and the rest of Fox News have staunchly defended Moore and said that so far these are just allegations and the timing is “interesting.”
So how did the Republicans fall so far to justify pedophilia in the name of party loyalty? Why doesn’t the party of family values regard sexual assault as well... a problem? Or does restricting where people can piss and controlling women’s bodies warrant more attention?
Let’s face it, it is beyond easy to attack Republicans for their hypocritical behavior of women. They don’t really make it hard for us to pinpoint problematic and, in most cases, criminal behavior from Donald Trump’s infamous locker talk to Roger Ailes endless harassment cases.
But is it just fanatical Evangelicals? Alabamians? Republicans? Or is it us too? Are we guilty of voting against our conscience to elect a leader that votes like us? If you just said no let’s look back two decades ago.
When rape and sexual harassment accusations came out against Bill Clinton, Democrats simply swept it under the rug as a right-wing conspiracy. Pragmatically this made sense. Clinton was the most feminist president we had at that time. He was an unequivocal supporter of abortion, prioritized child care, and signed the Family and Medical Leave Act into policy. Out of the twenty-one women that served in Cabinet-level positions, Clinton appointed ten of them. But his women first policies doesn’t exonerate how he used his powerful position to take advantage of the women that worked for him.
Yet while the concept “trust all victims” was a prominent phrase for feminists it did not come to fruition against their own candidate.
As a nation, it’s disgusting that the only thing we are bipartisan on is justifying sexual assault. But we can do better.#MeToo has already shown staggering results with Kevin Spacey facing possible jail time and more women feeling safe about coming out. We need to take the same condemnation we give our Hollywood actors to our elected officials. We should be voting on character and not party lines. And in order for the Democratic party to move on and unite it needs to come to terms with its complacent attitude toward their feminist president Bill Clinton.
