After spending several months binge-watching all nine seasons of “The Office (U.S.),”I felt as though I was left with a void that needed to be replaced. I took up “The Office's” sister show, “Parks and Recreation” because I appreciated the similarity in dry humor and I've only heard great things about the series. Starting it was hard because not shockingly but to still my disappointment, the premise of the show itself was different from “The Office.”
On a positive note, “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” have few in common that allows them to hold their own and to appreciate them both independently. I am halfway through the series of “Parks and Recreation” but already, there is much that I have learned and appreciated from this show that I would like to share. Here are the six things that “Parks and Recreation have taught me so far.
1. "Treat Yo' Self."
If there's one thing to remember, it's that Donna, Tom, and Ben have taught us that it's ok to go ahead and treat yourself every once in a while. We've been working hard on school, work and just life in general and we deserve it. Splurge on that one thing that'll make you happy, even if it is a batman suit.
2. Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.
A Jack of all trades is a master of none. Don't spread yourself too thin trying to juggle everything at once. It's best to put all your effort into one thing, you'll be more successful in the end.
3. There's no such thing as too much whipped cream.
Coming from a part-time Denny's server and brunch enthusiast, there's nothing better than whipped cream covered waffles. Enough said.
4. If you love something, fight for it.
Leslie loves Pawnee with all her heart and her passion for her hometown has fueled her to committing her life to fight to make her town and the citizens of it the greatest in the world. She will go to wits ends to knock down any obstacle in her way. Take that same energy Leslie uses for Pawnee to go after what you love.
5. Everyone needs an Ann Perkins.
Ann and Leslie met in the oddest circumstance. Since then they have been best friends for life. Everyone needs a right-hand man that will be at your side no matter what. whether it's guy problems, or managing a political campaign, and if it comes down to it, defending your BFF "Pawnee style."
6. Love your hometown.
Take pride in where you come from. No one else is allowed to talk trash about your hometown but you and the people from it. It may be small and minute with not much to offer, but hey, it produced you and made the great person that you are today.
