A Pakistani tea salesman became famous overnight for his blue eyes when a photographer took a picture of him and it went viral.
Jiah Ali (a photographer based in Pakistan) shot the picture of Arshad Khan,18, at a market in Pakistan’s capital and uploaded it to her Instagram account on Sunday, Oct. 16. The picture was then shared thousands of times on Twitter and other social media sites all throughout Pakistan and India.
Almost overnight, the teen who had been selling tea for three months, and had been working various odd jobs since he was a child, became famous.
But don’t get excited for Khan, or feel that his life turned rosy too soon—critics point to the possibility of Khan’s image being used by the rich while he suffers. And Khan’s chance of scoring any roles in movies is limited, due to the conflict between India and Pakistan.
Last month, Pakistani militants killed 19 troops in India. India has blamed Pakistan for protecting the rebels, and some groups are saying that they are going to boycott an upcoming Bollywood film with a Pakistani actor. Also, a group of Indian actors and film technicians has banned Pakistani staff from being hired, as well as delivering orders for any Pakistani actors who stayed behind to be deported.
As for Khan’s image being used for the sake of money, I think that is a very real possibility. When Khan was interviewed, people made fun of the way he talked and his local dialect. Much as Honey Boo Boo was featured on reality T.V. and became famous, neither she nor Mama June got as much fun out of it as audiences did. Sure, they get fame, and with that often comes money; but it is often exploitative.
Khan has been offered a modeling contract to Pakistani clothing company Fitin.pk. We shall have to wait and see what happens after that.
