Just a few dozen miles away from the heart of Chicago, lies Schaumburg, Illinois. While it isn’t downtown Chicago, the loyalty and devotion to the Chicago Bears lives just as great here. I was raised in Schaumburg my whole life, so how did I become a Packers fan? The Green Bay Packers are the arch-rivals to the Chicago Bears. It’s time for me to get some insults out now, the Bears are god awful and haven’t had a decent team in almost a decade.
The owner of the Chicago Bears, Aaron Rodgers, unleashes his force onto the league in Green and Gold. The Packers Quarterback has been handling the Bears ever since he got into the league and it looks like the ass beatings won’t stop anytime soon. Now that the insults are out, let’s talk about how a kid from Schaumburg became such a die hard packers fan.
To begin, I think it has something to do with my rebellious personality. My household was always filled with Bears and Cubs fans. Is it a coincidence that I love the Packers and White Sox while almost my entire family likes the opposite? I saw that so many people liked the Bears and so many people bandwagoned the Cubs, that at a young age, I wanted to be different. I watched the White Sox win the 2005 World Series, and I have watched every single Packers game since 2008. To say I’m a diehard fan is an understatement.
Another important thing to know is my favorite color. Ever since I was a baby, my favorite color was green. I love the dark green color in whatever I see. So when I first started watching football, I saw those beautiful green jerseys that the Packers wear. There is something to be said about seeing your favorite team in such a cool color. You can be like every other team and wear black and orange or you can be the Green Bay Packers.
Probably the most important factor that made me a Packers fan was Brett Favre. When I first started watching the Packers, Brett Favre was winding his career down in Green Bay. Brett Favre had this swagger that I could never fully explain. He always acted better than everyone else and he almost always backed it up. He was a southern boy who threw the ball whenever he felt like it, and I loved it. His name was also awesome, “F-A-V-R-E.” I used to pronounce it like Fa-Vre, but I learned better and was amazed by the fact that it was pronounced Far-Ve.
I started watching the Packers in 2006, and by the 2007 season, I was hooked. I loved watching the Packers dominate until that 2008 NFC Championship playoff game against the Giants. Brett Favre and the Packers lost that game in heartbreaking fashion, and I was upset for weeks. Brett Favre “retired” for the first time and I was a devoted fan for the team for life. Aaron Rodgers came in and started a dynasty of success. Although he has only won one Super Bowl, that man is the best player to walk the earth and he will forever be my favorite player.
The Packers are a living historical landmark which no other team can compare. Their traditions and history of successes have brought fans from around the world. Not only am I a die-hard fan, but I am an owner of the team too! Although that sounds cool, It doesn’t really have any responsibilities connected to it, but it’s still a cool thing to say. Schaumburg may be Bears country, but I’m glad I turned out to be a Packers fan through thick and thin. Can’t wait to watch the Bears go 0-2 against the Packers again this season. Go Pack, go!
