Taking care of a pet in college is difficult no matter what, but there is something stress-relieving about having a furry friend around. If you are considering taking on a pet in college, cats are a practical option. I might be biased because I currently own three cats, but they are low-maintenance, stress-relieving, and have the biggest personalities. Cats are worth it, and here's nine reasons why you should consider adopting your own.
They are independent
GiphyFor the most part, cats tend to take care of themselves. Unlike dogs, who have to be taken outside several times a day, cats will use their litter box freely. Being independent is engrained in cats when they are very young, so they are perfect for people who have busy daytime schedules.
They clean themselves daily
GiphyAlong with their independent nature, cats bathe themselves all day long. Why is this important? Well if you've ever owned a dog (especially a big one), bath time can be a pain. Being free from bath time is just one of the little perks of being a cat owner.
They don't need a ton of attention
GiphyCats enjoy doing their own thing and will generally seek out your attention on their terms. This can be frustrating when all you wanna do is squish their face and shower them with love. However, just like humans, cats need their space too.
Cats are the perfect companion for introverts
GiphyThey don't require a lot of energy. Cats won't jump all over you when you get home, they are very mellow most of the time, and they can have a calming effect. Being an introvert, I have really experienced the benefits of owning cats. Like any other pet, they require effort, but they have definitely calmed my anxiety.
You will always have a cuddle buddy
GiphyNothing compares to watching your cat roll up into a ball next to you. Not only is it the sweetest thing, but you don't feel lonely. I used to live by myself and having my cat around gave me some peace of mind.
You have to work on your relationship with them
GiphyThis could easily sound like a con, but the relationship I have with my cats did not happen overnight. Dogs generally don't take as long to warm up to people, but with cats it's satisfying to know that they actually want to be around you. You might have to work harder for their affection, but it is so worth the time.
Those biscuits though
GiphyMy cat "makes biscuits" next to me every night before bed. Essentially, she is just kneading the blanket because she feels happy and content. This is honestly such an under appreciated fact about cats. It definitely has mood-boosting and calming effects.
You can make them a hip Instagram
GiphyCats provide us with some hilarious entertainment. I love following other people's pets and keeping up with their shenanigans!
They have nine lives
GiphyNot really, but cats can live as long as 17-20 years old. Thinking that the cats I got in college will possibly be by my side through multiple stages of my life warms my heart. It's a serious commitment, but they really do become part of the family.
