9 Reasons Why You Should Own A Cat In College

Taking care of a pet in college is difficult no matter what, but there is something stress-relieving about having a furry friend around. If you are considering taking on a pet in college, cats are a practical option. I might be biased because I currently own three cats, but they are low-maintenance, stress-relieving, and have the biggest personalities. Cats are worth it, and here's nine reasons why you should consider adopting your own.

They are independent

For the most part, cats tend to take care of themselves. Unlike dogs, who have to be taken outside several times a day, cats will use their litter box freely. Being independent is engrained in cats when they are very young, so they are perfect for people who have busy daytime schedules.

They clean themselves daily

Along with their independent nature, cats bathe themselves all day long. Why is this important? Well if you've ever owned a dog (especially a big one), bath time can be a pain. Being free from bath time is just one of the little perks of being a cat owner.

They don't need a ton of attention

Cats enjoy doing their own thing and will generally seek out your attention on their terms. This can be frustrating when all you wanna do is squish their face and shower them with love. However, just like humans, cats need their space too.

Cats are the perfect companion for introverts

They don't require a lot of energy. Cats won't jump all over you when you get home, they are very mellow most of the time, and they can have a calming effect. Being an introvert, I have really experienced the benefits of owning cats. Like any other pet, they require effort, but they have definitely calmed my anxiety.

You will always have a cuddle buddy

Nothing compares to watching your cat roll up into a ball next to you. Not only is it the sweetest thing, but you don't feel lonely. I used to live by myself and having my cat around gave me some peace of mind.

You have to work on your relationship with them

This could easily sound like a con, but the relationship I have with my cats did not happen overnight. Dogs generally don't take as long to warm up to people, but with cats it's satisfying to know that they actually want to be around you. You might have to work harder for their affection, but it is so worth the time.

Those biscuits though

Giphy

My cat "makes biscuits" next to me every night before bed. Essentially, she is just kneading the blanket because she feels happy and content. This is honestly such an under appreciated fact about cats. It definitely has mood-boosting and calming effects.

You can make them a hip Instagram

Cats provide us with some hilarious entertainment. I love following other people's pets and keeping up with their shenanigans!

They have nine lives

Giphy

Not really, but cats can live as long as 17-20 years old. Thinking that the cats I got in college will possibly be by my side through multiple stages of my life warms my heart. It's a serious commitment, but they really do become part of the family.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
