The Glorification Of ‘The Grind’ Is Plaguing Millennials And Future Generations

The number of times a friend has come up to me bragging about their 3 a.m. sleep schedule, or how they've been juggling four or five extracurriculars without a breather, is making me reflect on my own schedule.

Why am I so obsessed with not having enough time for myself?

It's because I feel left behind in a generation so informed on how successful everyone else is, that 'the grind' is a badge of honor. Though not having enough time to sit down and talk with my parents or even just read a book for fun nags at the back of my mind, I tell myself that I am doing the right thing for my future... that I will have time for such things later.

However, the reality is that habits are hard to break and this productivity guilt will carry on well into my life as I join the workforce.

Which makes me think, what does this mean for society 10 years from now?

If much of our workforce is deprived of time to live life, we will have a future of overworked members of society who will find it increasingly difficult to get married, have children, or just participate in their communities aside from their work. Ironically, an entire generation groomed by the principles of participation and involvement, will have little time to even be involved in their own lives. Having fun should not be a luxury.

The fact is that leisure time plays a huge part in our mental health. The art of appreciating life for its details is vanishing — appreciating nature, eating a meal with someone rather than in front of a laptop, holding the door open for people, A generation of jaded people leaves us with a loose hold on our empathy and our humanity, as far-fetched as that may sound.

It begins as early as high school, the expectation to pile more onto your plate than you can healthily consume. It is important to understand the kind of mentality we are perpetuating when we copy others in the assumption that "it's cool."

At the end of the day, I look back on how much of life I've gained by how much love and wisdom I acquired, not by how many hours I sacrificed sleep and joy.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
