Every year, more and more people continue to take power into their own hands and use their constitutionally guaranteed First Amendment to go to the streets and protest. I want to talk about a situation at our school last week, the National School Walkout. In this, hundreds of kids left their classes to honor the victims of school shootings from around the United States. This was a truly great experience as I saw many of my friends and students all around us march for the right to be safe in school and to have gun control laws in America. This event marked the one month anniversary of the Parkland School shooting. I saw kids who had never so much as broken a rule start to advocate against this school shooting.
In many districts, this walkout was banned due to it having many different consequences. Teachers were threatening to bring guns to school or ban their students from leaving, but why? These people have a right to express their power against those who seem to be making the bad choices for the people. Not just students, but adults, as well, have a right to stand up for their beliefs. People should not be condemned for their actions; they should be supported by everyone, not just those people who think they are right. Support has to come from the bottom of our hearts, not from a place of hatred.
The people of our wonderful nation should see the greatness in being united against major issues. Our land is supposed to be one of opportunity, not of repression. It is our duty as the future generation to make sure that everyone is equally treated.
