Someone's Beliefs Shouldn't Decide How We Treat Them

Someone's Beliefs Shouldn't Decide How We Treat Them

Over the last week I've logged onto Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and for the countless time, my news feeds have been full of hate. Hate at--well--everything. Hate towards the Transgenders, hate towards Trump, hate towards each other, and it breaks my heart. You see, no matter what I believe, whether I side with Trump or the Transgenders or I don't really have a clue, it shouldn't matter. Someone's beliefs shouldn't decide how we treat them.

Everyone, every single person, has a right to kindness. You know how strongly you disagree with Trump? Well, your neighbor feels just as strongly against whatever Trump's opposing at the time. We all have beliefs, passions, and dreams. We all treasure them the same amount. Everyone has plans to meet their goals, reasons behind their beliefs, and motivation for their passions. So why is it my right to degrade someone for any of those things just because they don't match mine?

And besides, look at how productive we've been with all of this hate. Look at all the things we've gotten done. We can scream, march, bicker, and say nasty things on social media, but how many problems are solved by doing so? None. We aren't getting anything done or solving any problems.

What if we took the energy we're wasting on hating each other and focus it on resolving our problems? It won't be easy or quick. Yes, there will have to be genuine and productive discussions, there will have to be compromises, and we are not going to like every outcome that happens. But won't it be worth it? Won't getting along with others, being more productive, and being surrounded by kindness outweigh the negatives?

Not only will we be more productive, but everyone needs kindness. There's never been an act of kindness that doesn't make me smile. The world needs kindness more than ever before. The chances of our nation's leaders being kind is unfortunately low, so we need all the kindness we can spare out on the streets.

Let's be kind to people, even if we disagree, even if they "don't deserve it", even if it's hard. Be kind to people because our hate isn't solving our problems. Be kind because you will never regret it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
