It could be said that sometimes one word may mean another, some hidden meaning disguised as a lesser term. One look may mean another, one lost expression, one pleading glance, saying more with less. One pause may mean more than a break between words but a skip of thought, a shifted decision, or a loss of courage. One sigh, one hiccup, one sob may mean more than a catching of the breath but a slipping grasp on control, an inability to hold it all in anymore. One twitch, one flinch may mean more than a jerk of motion but an instinctive retreat, one action for another, diminished to another. One blown pupil may meet another’s, one stare shared between strangers, offering one last chance to puzzle out the significance of other words and winces and wet eyes before she is led away by one who claims to love her. One moment cannot be traded for another, one second is a second too late to save a helpless other.
