Having a Positive Attitude Toward the New Year

Don't miss out on the amazing things in the moment.

At the beginning of each year, we always do the same thing. We make new year resolutions and we always say that this year is going to be our year. However, later in September or October, we are about ready for a new year because this one was pretty rough, right? It seems to be the same thing every year, but what if this year, you have a new perspective on it? Instead of saying, this is gonna be my year, what if you say this is gonna be a year? It might be good, it might be rough, but it's defiantly going to be a year.

I think around New Year's, we put so much pressure on the new year about to happen. We don't know what is going to happen in the new year because none of us can look into the future. The only person that knows what will happen is God. You can allow yourself to think "oh it's gonna be my year", but later you might think "well, why did this happen, I thought this was gonna be a good year".

In the Bible, Jesus might have thought the same. He might have thought you know today is gonna be a good day. But later, the day might have gotten frustrated with a lot of people bothering him and trying to hurt him or his friends. However, at the end of the day, He still went to God and prayed and thanked him for the day, whether it was good or bad.

Let's be honest for a hot minute though. Not one year is going to be perfect. Every year has 365 days. That's a lot of days of perfection and good things, and it's not normally possible to even have a perfect month, let alone a perfect year. Every year might have its ups and downs through it all, but it's the way we look at it, that makes it all better.

Lately, I've been doing this little grateful checklist at the end of the day. I try to find three good things that maybe I didn't notice during the moment, but at the end of the day, they seemed like really awesome things. I like this because sometimes when we are so focused on the situation at hand or the highs and lows of life, we miss the really amazing things right in front of us.

Maybe, that's something you want to try in the new year? Even though the new year is always the same with resolutions and some pretty high standards, you might want to try and have a new perspective on it. It's gonna have it's ups and downs just like everything in life, but don't miss the really amazing moments in the middle of all of it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
