And The Oscar Goes To: The Race Card

Seriously, we get It.

The 88th Academy Awards seemed to be much more controversial compared to award shows in the past. 700 million viewers tuned in to, lets face it, see if Leo would actually take home his long deserved award.

In all seriousness, the race card was definitely the star of the show. With Chris Rock as this year's host, there was bound to be some race jokes thrown around here and there but I don't think anyone could have predicted the entire show being based on the fact that there were no nominees with African-American origin.

Leading up to the Oscars, people were raging about the nominee controversy, from the normal American citizens hiding behind a computer screen promoting boycotts to celebrities refusing to show such as Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada was upset because Will Smith did not receive a nomination for "Concussion" and she definitely was not afraid to show it. Will ended up commenting on her outrage. "It was her call to action for herself, for me and for our family to be a part of the solution.”

Even Chris Rock openly made "black" jokes on Twitter. Calling The Oscars the White BET awards and using the hashtag #blackout

Now besides selling Girl Scout cookies, Chris Rock pushed the issue of diversity and how the Academy needs to stop being so “white dominated.” Right off the bat, he started his spiel in his opening monologue. “You realize, if they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job!” he stated jokingly. However, with the constant repetitiveness, the jokes got old quick. He said Michael B. Jordan “should’ve been nominated” and that Black History Month Tribute, well, Jack Black that is--I mean c’mon. Kevin Hart also had some wise words to say that were a little more tasteful and positive.

"I want to take a moment to applaud all of my actors and actresses of color tonight," Hart said. "Tonight should not determine the hard work and effort you put into your craft. These problems of today eventually become problems of the old. Let's not let this issue of diversity beat us."

African American men and women have been nominated in the past. Successful actors such as Morgan Freeman, Whoopie Goldberg, Denzel Washington etc. have been recognized. Not to mention, some have won such as Jamie Foxx, Halle Berry and Forest Whitaker. Obviously the Academy has nothing against the African American race, it is just another social media frenzy that took things way out of proportion.

All in all, the show was rather entertaining. Mad Max basically took home everything, the Girl Scouts magically got $26,000 straight from movies stars' pockets, Lady Gaga killed her powerful performance receiving a standing ovation (per usual) oh and Leo finally got his Oscar Unfortunately, everything always has to get played back into race or gender. It always has to be one way or the other. But why? It is 2016 and we, as a society, still can’t figure out how to coexist without seeing a group of people more superior than the other. No, the Academy did not only pick white nominees because they are better than Asian or the African Americans actors. Those nominees were chosen based on their excellent performances in some of the greatest films ever made.

So let's grow up and stop blaming race because it’s just easy to point fingers. Every nominee deserved their recognition so its time to stop the excessive amount of “unfair jokes” and focus on the fact that it took 41 years and four Best Actor nominations for Leo to add “Oscar Nominated” to his name. You go Leo. The war is over.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
