A Look Into My Oregon Mini Road Trip

When you have Thanksgiving in Oregon...

A Look Into My Oregon Mini Road Trip
Kira McClary

First things first, I am from California (land of nothing green and no rain) and go to school in Oregon.

Second, road trips are the best.

This year my brother and I road tripped to Florence, Oregon from Salem for Thanksgiving. Yes, it is only a two hour drive, but possibly one of the prettiest two hour drives. As we started on our road trip we got the tunes started and settled into our seats, preparing ourselves to sit.

On road trips, sometimes you get behind a car and it stays that way for an hour and you somehow get attached to that car and become road trip buddies? Then the car turns and leaves you to take the rest of the drive alone, and you get kind of sad because you miss the little red car in front of you? That happened to us. The silliest things make road trips fun.

We made our way through the windy roads, surrounded by some of the prettiest, greenest trees I have ever seen.

The mountains are incredible. They separate the bigger cities from the small beach towns. Because it is the beginning of winter and Oregon is in a funk, we saw tons of green trees surrounded by foggy grey skies. At one point, we were passing through a strip of land that went through a forest. I was able to take stunning picture of the trees with the misty grey fog rolling over the tree tops. Gosh, nature is so stunning!

As we continued on our little journey, we ended up in Dunes Bay which is right outside of Florence, Oregon. We stopped at Jesse M. Honeyman Memorial State Park. This park is amazing! On one side it is surrounded by houses and an RV park, and then the other side is sand dunes where people can ATV and sand board. The way the trees reflected off the water was breath taking. We met up with my parents and walked our puppies around for a bit before we continued on our way.

A few miles down the road from the state park was our house. We drove down an itty bitty road, hardly noticeable from the road. The path leads down to a gorgeous house that is backed by Woahink Lake. The windows of the house are huge and look out onto the water. There is a little boat house that is falling apart with a half broken picnic table. I like the boat the most though because it provides a nice little place for me to study while I am able to be close to the water. The dock is pretty long. It is a little wobbly but gives you a great view of the water.

I am so blessed to be able to spend time with my family and puppies. Here is to another year of being able to be thankful for many new things.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
