It has been only been released a little over a week, but I have already finished the third season of the Netflix original show, "Orange Is The New Black." Fans have been waiting a year for the third season's release, but it's left us with mixed reviews. While I enjoyed spending approximately 13 hours of my life watching the show, I can admit the third season proved to be a tad lackluster.
The series follows Piper, a sheltered, 30-something, who is sent to a minimum security women's prison named Litchfield after being convicted of drug-related crimes she committed 10 years earlier with her then-girlfriend. The previous two seasons introduced a slew of characters and central conflicts occuring within the walls of Litchfield that dealt with love, infidelity, drugs, and violence. It provides no shortage of emotion, humor, and, especially, drama.
At first, I didn't know if I would like the show. A series about women in prison? It didn't sound like my cup of tea. However, I was hooked after the first episode. You learn the character's backstories and grow love them for their mistakes. I became emotionally invested, finishing the first two seasons in a little over a week. After I was done with season two, I learned I would have to wait until June 2015 for the third season to be released on Netflix, and from there on it was a waiting game.
Fastforward a year, and here I am, season three finished. In my opinion, the season was basically made for nothing. Season one, we were introduced to everyone. Season two, we were thrown around with new characters, new drama, and new plot twists. Season three, well.... I don't really know. That's the problem, I don't know exactly what this was meant to do for the series. It kind of seemed like a placeholder while the writers and producers think up of what drama to throw at us next.
Probably the most noteworthy part of season three was the addition of Ruby Rose to the cast, playing new convict named Stella. Don't think you know who she is? Well, you're wrong:
Ruby Rose has become an internet sensation for being so attractive, girls are beginning to question their sexuality. Her character becomes Piper's love interest for most of the season, which adds some charm to the season. However, their relationship doesn't end well in the finale, and it doesn't look like we will be seeing anymore of Stella in further seasons.
All in all, in my opinion, the third season of the hit series doesn't prove to add anything special, leaving me unsatisfied, yet wanting more. Was season three just a fluke? Well, I sure do hope so because I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to Litchfield.
