'Orange Is The New Black': Bringing Major Issues Into Mainstream Media

CAUTION: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING UP TO THE FOURTH SEASON OF "ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK."

"Orange is the New Black" is one of my (not so) guilty pleasures. I legitimately hate myself for finishing each season in two days and having to wait another 363 days for the next season. I have grown so attached to each character and come to furiously hate others. I adore the representation, the story-lines and the re-humanization of each inmate by telling their backstories. I love how even the strongest of characters can still be a little fragile, because, at the end of the day, we are all human. I see so much of myself in Red in the sense that she wasn't the strongest of women in her backstory, was kind of an outcast, but learned to find strength and become a leader for the kitchen and her "family." I love how almost any kind of person can find a character to relate to that extent with.

However, this season particularly pulled at my heartstrings -- both the best and the worst ways. I am elated that there was representation of a Muslim in hijab (a black Muslim at that, my heart), and I love how characters this season who were almost complete opposites were looking out for one another. Boo's protectiveness over Pennsatucky -- I believe, was an absolutely beautiful display of true friendship. As well has Jane's sacrifice of going to the SHU in order to help save Sophia (cue sigh of relief when we figure out she's not actually dead). This season, though, displayed a couple of quite relevant issues -- one of them being police brutality.

One thing I was not expecting at all this season was Poussey's death. Poussey was such a lovable character, literally lit up every scene she was in, had amazing character chemistry with Taystee (arguably better chemistry than Piper and Alex) and was a staple to the show, really. Maybe that's why I found myself bawling my eyes out and screaming at my laptop screen when she went in the most undeserving way possible, and by the least violent corrections officer of the season.

It was quite obvious that COs this season were meant to anger viewers, to tackle the issue of police brutality. The sexual harassment and literal cruel and unusual punishments shown in this group of thirteen episodes actually made me sick (where did Humps even find a baby mouse?). But the fact that Piscatella forced Bayley to detain Poussey when she was just trying to deescalate the situation makes it all the more infuriating.

It didn't take long to see that her death was meant to mirror all of the different police brutality deaths that have happened in the past year or so. In chronological order, the inmates standing on top of the tables in the cafeteria as a peaceful protest to get Piscatella to resign was meant to mirror Ferguson. In the chaos, Poussey being suffocated was and calling out, "I can't breathe, get off of me," was meant to illustrate Eric Garner being choked to death for selling individual cigarettes.

The death of Michael Brown was represented in Poussey's lifeless body not being moved from the cafeteria for countless hours after her death.

Behind the scenes, Caputo and his higher-ups were working on fabricating a situation that they could tell the media. They had to make Bayley the victim by saying Poussey was unstable and it had to be done (though that would not have made a convincing case) or make Bayley look like a monster who purposely murdered Poussey. Though the final decision was to blame Bayley for his actions, Caputo ended up victimizing him and not mentioning Poussey's name.

This sparked outrage in the prison as Taystee went through the hallways and dorms screaming , "They didn't even say her name," reflecting the case of Sandra Bland. And finally, the fourth season of "Orange is the New Black" came to an end with Dayanara pointing Humphrey's own gun at him, again symbolizing the uproar in Ferguson.

This show has never failed to amaze me with its progressiveness and fearlessness of taking on current issues and combating stigma. I am beyond eager to see where the creators take the show next, I know it will not be a disappointment.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
